TIDES brings together a diverse group of leaders shaping Tampa Bay’s role in the global economy. Speakers will include executives and experts from ports, airports, economic development organizations, logistics, international business, investment, and trade, offering insight into how Tampa’s global connections can create new opportunities for exporters, investors, and businesses.
Arthur Savage, the CEO and President of A.R. Savage & son, is the grandson of the company’s founder, Arthur Russel Savage. The business was established in 1945 but the family’s history in Tampa Bay’s maritime community goes back even farther.
His family sailed into Tampa in 1845 and played an important role in establishing regular shipping operations in Tampa Bay and has been deeply involved in the development of the ports and the community.
During WWII, Arthur’s grandfather, Arthur Russel Savage joined the U.S. Army Transportation Corps, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and serving as Port Commander of Antwerp. After returning from the war, he left the railroad and started his firm, the A. R. Savage Company, establishing a legacy that was carried on by his son, W.O. “Bill” Savage. After Bill died in 1982, his wife, Shirley Knight Savage, took over the company as President.
Shirley Knight Savage also served as Honorary Consul for Denmark and Norway from 1983 to 1998 and was knighted by both countries for Outstanding Service. In 1986, Shirley was recognized by the Propeller Club Port of Tampa as Maritime Person of the Year for her contributions to the industry, becoming the first woman in Florida to receive this honor.
She retired in 1998 and passed away in 2014. Today, their son Arthur R. Savage leads the company, now the oldest maritime agency on Florida’s west coast, continuing the family’s legacy of excellence and service.
Arthur Savage has also served as Honorary Consul for Norway and Denmark for Central Florida, since 1998 and 1993 respectively. In 2010, he was Promoted to First Class Knight of the Order of the Dannebrog by Her Majesty, Queen Margrethe II, of Denmark in recognition of valuable services as Consul of Denmark. In 2016 he was Awarded the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit in 2016 by King Harald of Norway for his service.
