When more than 1,000 physicians, healthcare leaders, philanthropists, and international guests gather in Tampa, the value to the city extends far beyond hotel rooms, restaurant visits, and convention activity.

The 44th Annual Convention and Scientific Assembly of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin offered Tampa an opportunity to demonstrate that it is not simply a destination for international events. It is a city increasingly capable of participating in—and helping lead—global conversations.

The convention was held July 2–5, 2026, at the JW Marriott Tampa Water Street and Tampa Marriott Water Street. It brought together members of one of the country’s most influential organizations representing physicians of Indian origin for scientific programming, professional networking, cultural events, and discussions about international healthcare cooperation.

Tampa Sister Cities and TIDES were represented by Alfred Goldberg and Deborah Wilkinson, with Sherri Brown representing Visit Tampa Bay. They joined Mayor Jane Castor as she presented the Key to the City to Nita Ambani, Founder and Chairperson of the Reliance Foundation.

The moment was ceremonial, but its broader significance illustrates why international events are important to Tampa.

The presentation to Nita Ambani was accompanied by recognition from AAPI, which presented her with its 2026 Humanitarian Award.
