Beyond the Scoreboard: Sports as a Tool of Diplomacy

Explore all conference sessions, including keynote talks, panels, and discussions across all tracks and topics.”

Sports speak a language that crosses borders.

From international competitions and athlete exchanges to youth programs and major sporting events, sports have long created opportunities for people from different countries to meet, compete, collaborate, and build relationships outside traditional diplomatic channels.

Beyond the Scoreboard: Sports as a Tool of Diplomacy explores how governments, communities, athletes, and sports organizations use the power of sport to strengthen international relationships, create cultural understanding, and build connections between people who might otherwise have little opportunity to interact.

The discussion will examine how sports can support diplomatic objectives while also creating meaningful person-to-person relationships. It will explore everything from athlete and coaching exchanges to the opportunities created when cities host teams, fans, and delegations from around the world.

The session will also consider Tampa Bay’s own position as a major sports market and how the region can use its teams, facilities, events, and sports organizations as platforms for deeper international engagement.

At its core, the conversation asks: What happens when the relationships created through sport continue long after the final whistle?
